Keeping your natural teeth for a lifetime is one of our primary goals at Sky Valley Dental. But when an extraction is necessary—Monroe dentist Dr. Cho only recommends it as a last resort. When a tooth extraction is necessary, it's important to know why and what your options are.

Tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth. You might need a tooth extraction for many different reasons, and for almost everyone, it is the last resort after everything else fails. However, there are some pros to the procedure too. Here is why you may need a tooth extraction:

1. Severe Decay

If you have a tooth that is severely decayed, it may need to be extracted. This is because the decay can cause the tooth to become weakened and fragile. Sometimes, it's possible to save the tooth with a root canal procedure. However, if the decay is too severe, an extraction may be the only option.

2. Impacted Teeth

Sometimes, teeth don't erupt through the gums as they should. This can happen if there isn't enough room in the mouth for all of the teeth or if something is blocking the tooth from erupting (such as another tooth). If this happens, an extraction may be necessary to prevent further problems.

3. Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue. If it's not treated, it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss. In some cases, a deep cleaning procedure can treat gum disease and help save your teeth. However, if the disease has progressed too far, an extraction may be necessary to prevent further damage.

4. Orthodontic Treatment

If you're planning to get orthodontic treatment, such as braces, you may need one or more teeth extracted first to create enough space in your mouth for the teeth to shift into their new positions.

5. Damaged Teeth

If you have a tooth that is cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged, a dentist will try to repair it first. There are times, however, when the damage is too severe to repair, and the only option is to remove the tooth.
