Dental crowns are a tooth restoration method with serious history, dating back over 3000 years. But in the last century, dental technology has progressed in leaps and bounds, with lab-made metal and porcelain dental crowns becoming the standard a few decades ago. But now, an even more modern option has emerged: same-day CEREC technology. This means you now have two excellent options to receive a dental crown.

At Sky Valley Dental, we offer both types of dental crowns and can make a CEREC crown in our office while you wait. Overall, we want to help you understand the differences between same-day CEREC crowns and conventional dental crowns so that you can make the best choice for your tooth restoration.

What Is a CEREC Same-day Dental Crown?

Time is one of the main differences between the two dental crown processes we may provide. As the name implies, the same day crown can be placed in one appointment. We use 3D scanning technology to make a digital impression of your damaged tooth, which we send instantly to a leading-edge milling machine. This machine sculpts your crown from a single block of porcelain ceramic, removing material until your crown is complete.

How Traditional Dental Crowns Are Made

A traditional crown process requires at least two dental visits with a week or two in between appointments. During your initial appointment, your dentist makes an impression that an outside dental lab uses to make your dental crown. While you wait, your dentist may provide a temporary crown, which you will need to treat carefully until your final restoration is complete.

You Should Choose the Dental Crown That Fits You Best

Many factors will go into your decision to get a conventional or same day dental crown, and we will help in that process. In general, a CEREC crown is convenient and durable, but you can only choose a ceramic material. Conventional dental crowns may be made from porcelain, metal, zirconia, and a combination of materials if you need extra strength.

Another consideration may be cost; at our dental office, we can control those costs by keeping the process in-house. We also help make paying for your treatments more accessible with our dental membership plan.
